I got the idea for this shoot a while ago when I was looking through pinterest. I came across a black and white photo of a model who had her hair styled so unusual and creative. I screenshot that photo and made it my goal to do my own shoot based off of that photo. But who would I do it with? Not many models that I know have that hair that long. I held onto that idea for some time until I came up with the idea of shooting it with our very own Rebellious Beauty brand ambassador – Shelby! She has long blonde hair that was closest to what I needed.
She lives in Toronto though. She was posted there for her modelling career. I sent her a message and attached the Inspo photo and idea that I had for this shoot. I asked if she would be down for this theme when she was back in Edmonton. She loved it and said YES!
I needed someone special to do her hair though. What needed to be done wasn’t your usual hair gig. But fortunately, I know one of the best hairstylists in the city–Joan from Viking’s Edge Hair.
December came around and Shelby was coming back home for the holidays. She only had a few l days though; So, we couldn’t mess around. She flew in from Toronto EARLY in the morning and basically came straight to the studio. That was impressive. We met at NAIT. It was my last day working with a NAIT photography student as my assistant.
Joan (Viking’s Edge Hair) met with us there and they got straight to work with Shelbys hair and makeup. They had a blast talking and getting to know each other. That kind of chemistry is what’s most important about a photoshoot. It helps the person in front of the camera loosen up.
The vibe we were going for was not so much “something pretty”, but more like a little broken. I know that Shelby’s interest and style is more in the darker mood, which she doesn’t get to do in her commerce work.
The lighting we needed to get this look was supposed to be just one bare bulb and a scrim. But I don’t know a single studio in Edmonton that has a scrim. So, I needed to improvise. I used a silver beauty dish as the key light; a softbox under her chin as the fill light, and two softbox behind her to light the background. So it was quite a bit more complicated than it should have been. I need to do more research and find a studio around here that has a scrim.
And at last! Here are the pictures. Now I want to incorporate more creative hair into more shoots–including boudoir! Have you ever thought of doing a shoot with creative hair and makeup? Send me us an email and let us know!
